A Grounded, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

The MCU has officially left the massive Avengers crossovers behind to give us a story focused entirely on Peter Parker. Set four full years after Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter has fully isolated himself. He is living in a rundown, sad apartment (evoking heavy Tobey Maguire vibes) and pushing away his civilian life. However, this isolation triggers an uncontrollable, literal physical evolution in his spider-powers as he battles a hidden, invisible threat lurking in New York.

Visually, the film is a massive upgrade. Director Destin Daniel Cretton focused heavily on practical filmmaking. Peter's new suit was physically built using inspiration from Tobey and Andrew Garfield's suits, and Tom Holland actually filmed heavily inside the mask. With Jackie Chan's stunt team choreographing the action, the martial arts and web-slinging feel far more kinetic, real, and punishing than the CGI-heavy battles of the previous trilogy.

The Return of Savage Hulk

For fans who have been begging Marvel to "do the Hulk right," your wish has been granted. Brand New Day totally resets Mark Ruffalo’s character, completely ditching the "Professor Hulk" persona in favor of a massive, brutal Savage Hulk.

Not only is this iteration physically larger than any version we've seen in the MCU, but they also removed the heavy vocal processing, allowing Ruffalo to voice the roaring monster naturally. The visual effects for Hulk's fight scenes are some of the best the MCU has ever produced, sparking rumors that Destin Daniel Cretton and Ruffalo might be secretly developing future solo Hulk projects.

Punisher, Sadie Sink & Street-Level Villains

The street-level corner of the MCU is expanding rapidly. Jon Bernthal makes his glorious return as Frank Castle, aka The Punisher. While the movie is PG-13, they found a hilarious workaround for his character: every time Punisher tries to unleash an R-rated string of curses, Spider-Man simply webs his mouth shut. Bernthal and Holland’s dynamic is a major highlight.

The movie also introduces Stranger Things star Sadie Sink in a highly guarded, secret role that promises to be a massive foundational piece for the MCU moving forward.
